I happened to see this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-584HzQS6_8
Right at the beginning the thief does 12k damage on a single hit. Makes me and my 2k-ish crits think I did something wrong with the traits and equipment..

That's a pretty insane Backstab. I think you can also get up to 20k dmg with further damage specing.
Speaking of high damage hits...

hmmm......time to nerf...LOL
Noo don't nerf it before I can run around going in with steal traited to give stealth, stab them once, use cloak and dagger and stab them again
Talking about steal, I found it quite useful when traited to give stealth, could be used as shadowstep+ stealth or just stealth when no target was selected. The stolen items were often quite useful as well, though I would've liked the info window to pop up as soon as I stole something. Having to mouse over the thing to actually see what it does is sort of pain.
Are you a guardian? Let me introduce you to my Flesh Golem, he's getting a bit hungry.
Stealth on steal is almost mandatory for a thief (which can actually be considered a bad thing). It is indeed extremely useful. Too bad that the only really useful aspect of steal are the trait benefits. The thing you steal is often rather subpar (the only good one being the steal where you get all boons for 10 seconds).
I'm looking forward to trying it in the next BWE
I think damage spikes such as this and of various professions I've seen over several beta weekends are very subjective. Many of the scenarios I've come across where I've dealt obscene damage against a player isn't necessarily reflective of the class. Instead it can be very much dependent on player toughness, vitality and build. I remember in one particular circumstance a few phases ago on my Ranger that I killed an Elementalist in 4 hits. In contrast, one Elementalist I fought later on that day simply would not die.
I expect many people have decided at this early stage to go for a glass cannon approach, rather than a more balanced build.
Very much a glass cannon build.
Which is why I believe the Thief profession will be the preferred profession to pull off this kind of build most successfully, due to their stealth and dodging advantages.

I love how the thief has some skills with the bow too. Makes you a little more viable in WvW. Before I found this out this last weekend I was wondering "if there is no perma stealth skill, or no climbing walls, what can a thief do in WvW?" But playing one for a little bit shows I can do some decent aoe things with the bow.
I usually don't play these types of characters but I might just make one of these one day :)
