Guild Wars 2 Trailer: Our Time Is Awful

September 11, 2012 - 2:20pm -- Xerin
Guild Wars 2 Eye

I'm really lost for words in regards to this trailer and I think its fair to say that the entire internet winced when it launched. Besides the final 15 seconds where Zhaitan makes an appearance the entire trailer is a cringe-worthy mess that serves no purpose but to do damage to the previously flawless trailers so lovely crafted by ArenaNet. Which begs the question, why was it made and what is it trying to achieve?

I'm genuinely struggling to understand how any of the live action footage even correlates to the game and for some reason it reminds me of the awful Kodak adverts I was forced to watch in Epcot at Disney World.

It might be best if we all just pretend this never happened.

Im one of the few that liked

Im one of the few that liked it.

First because it was out of the expected (thus, the "impact").

Second because I could relate the mud/immovable person to us stuck in the same old ways

Third because the I could relate the graffith thing to the "youngers rebellion" against the system

Fouth because it shows a lot of unknown person joining a fight against a common enemy (pretty much the world events).

BUUUUT, I dislike it because its clearly targetted to whoever already played and/or followed the game for the last year.
To a new player, a new audience, it wont work, it wont show how different the game can be.

Last note: the face in the smoke thing still a riddle to me. Is it a charr face? an undead? I have no clue :(

*sorry the broken english, brazilian here ;)*

In PvP, we work side by side
In PvE we gathered, our missions all to conquer
In Roleplaying, we RP'd with pride

Yep, I'm among the majority

Yep, I'm among the majority who just didn't get it. I would've loved this trailer if it were for a game like The Secret World, but...it isn't. From the point where the woman emerges from the water and starts taking on the norn tattoos the video was good, but...yeah. Let's pretend the rest of it never happened.

It was truly awful. It

It was truly awful. It reminded me it of that well-know, famous PlayStation commercial, but this one was horrible.

I'm a master baiter!

I got the message, but it's still an awful trailer.

DID NOT LIKE.

I assume the following:

-The head of the project that created the trailer does not play games, specifically MMOs/RPGs

-The project team for the trailer does not understand what kind of company Anet/NCSoft are

-ANet/NCSoft approved the trailer to go live because they had nothing else or took a gamble on it and lost BIG TIME

Surely people from ANet/NCSoft were like "WTF is this?!" when they first saw this trailer.

This instantly made me think

This instantly made me think of two things:

  1. An EVE Online TV spot from a couple of years back that depicts a person in their normal life transform into their EVE character
  2. The Secret World

The first time I watched the trailer I had the sound muted (was in a meeting at the time) and based on the images alone those two things instantly sprang to mind.

My suggestion: More stuff like the Rytlock miniature promo, more Zhaitan, less random gas masks.

I leave the internet for a couple of days, and when I come back I find this? Remind me not to break my computer again D:

I loved all the other trailers, they had really original style and really felt like they were gw2 trailers. When I started watching this I found myself checking the title, just in case I clicked the wrong video.

Acclaimed Director James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) was brought on board to lend his revolutionary zeal and craftsman's eye to the launch trailer.

Big mistake. Their trailers so far have been great, so why let an outsider do it? If I didn't know about gw2, I wouldn't have even watched the whole thing.
