How is Mesmer like, damage-wise?

August 17, 2012 - 12:51pm -- MokiCzech

I have read the guide and seen some videos, but haven't got much time to play him myself. I wanted to try him out as soon as the game is out, and eventually use him as my main. Is he more of a support-ish profession, or is he great damage dealer? I am currently thinking between Thief, Engineer and Mesmer and I am just not sure.

Anyone tried him a bit? If so, what is the best offensive build, in your opinion?

Thanks!

Well, I haven't properly

Well, I haven't properly tried one myself, but I remember some dev saying before we had had a change to play one that they would be one of the best damage dealers in game.

I also saw some mesmers using blurred frenzy and mind wrack for spikes, and they seemed to be fairly effective, but it was ages ago. Still, I'd expect them to have decent damage, and they have amazing support abilities as well. Several small guilds in WvW use mesmer portals to suddenly appear behind (or in the middle of) enemy lines, one of their elites is mass invisibility and the other is aoe quickness, to name a few.

EDIT: Oh, and they did do some nasty damage with illusionary duelist as well. Simply put, they're one of the most difficult professions to play, but amazing once mastered smiley

Are you a guardian? Let me introduce you to my Flesh Golem, he's getting a bit hungry.

Lovely, thanks for quick

Lovely, thanks for quick answer. He seems to me like ranged thief with support abilities, heh. Thing is, I expect to play alone a lot (or with random people) and I would rather depend on my own skills than on how others manage to make use of my support abilities. Thief seems to be better at this, since you are much more "on your own", but Mesmer seems like very well done profession with new features that were not really seen before. Damn, I am not sure.

I'm a master baiter!

The new videos Lewis put up

The new videos Lewis put up will give you a good taste.  They are an amazing class, but I just couldn't get into them.  Perhaps down the road I'll try them out again, as it's obvious from their abilities that they can do a heck of a lot to manipulate conditions etc. and do damage with lots of creative ways to use invisibility/portals etc.

Mesmer vs Guardian

Hi,

So I've not been playing in beta, but this headstart is where I've been playing GW2 recently. I started with the Mesmer class and found it a little *underpowered* to be honest, if you compare the same level (I'm only level 6) with a Guardian. A guardian can do burst dmg every 5th ability AND has 2 heals AND is tankier..

As for mesmer's if you don't already know, if you target an enemy and have clones / illusions out, if the enemy dies, all your clones DISAPPEAR while your skills are on cooldown. In a mob, that is very hard to manage. Plus your first healing requires you to shatter your illusions... You really have to manage your clones / illusions very well. The scepter creates an illusion every 3rd attack. And for me somehow the 1h sword's 3rd ability bugs out on me :(

Yeah, ranged damage on the

Yeah, ranged damage on the Mesmer is a bit weak at this point.  Definitely takes a bit more finesse to stay alive.

#3 skill on the one handed sword is definitely bugged.  It works maybe 1/10 times for me.  Only seems to work if the mob I'm attacking is on exactly the same elevation as I am (so perfectly flat floor).  Even the slightest elevation difference and the skill is a fail.  It's a shame because the sword is by far the highest burst damage weapon the Mesmer has right now.

Mesmer is really fun... you

Mesmer is really fun... you just have to figure out which weapon set you like the best. Staff and sword with either torch or focus is mine. Also, Mesmer starts out a little boring, but as soon as you can, get Arcane Thievery, its a lot of fun. Part of the boringness-seeming is that you arent actually using your weapons really. Such as greatsword, youre not using it to hit the enemy, instead its like a magical wand that you slap around and cause chaos effects with. Which is cool in itself, but kinda off-putting too.
