I agree. I don't remember seeing ranger traps though. I hit a lot of those spike traps and I don't remember seeing circles, but it could have been the heat of battle/not paying enough attention.
The problem with having them visible is that they aren't intended to work like an AoE spell necessarily. I view marks as magical traps..what good is a trap you can see? Best you can do is throw them around in front of people and hope that they can't move in time. I want to be able to set marks around objectives and have them trigger unexpectedly..otherwise what is the point?
Marks tend to have greenish glow to them anyway, even without the red circles they wouldn't be that hard to notice.
I agree that it would be nice if they weren't so easy to spot, but marks seem to work more around the idea that once they're placed, they pretty much wait there until they are triggered (How long do they remain there, exactly?). If you place a mark, the enemy either has to take the blow or not go to that area for a while. They're also very fast to cast, so you can quickly place them where you want.
Are you a guardian? Let me introduce you to my Flesh Golem, he's getting a bit hungry.
Think of it this way though, if enemies do avoid your marks, you then offer soft control over terrain with them (the marks).
The way I like to handle it though is to line marks up to literally block a ramp or pathway. That does a few things, either they trip one or they waste time by finding a way around, in each case I win. A few games in the stress test earlier this week I was able to actually manipulate where people tried to run and kite and throwing marks in the way they were going to run, forcing them to change their path and tactics, eventually making them go around in a big circle and corner themselves. Did my marks go off? Most of them didn't, but they didn't need to, the fear and desire to avoid those marks is the strongest feature they offer. In GW2 at a very early level we are already conditioned to fear red circles, red circles mean pain, or in some cases death, with a staff we gain many red circles, we get to play with the most primal of fears in GW2.
I make heavy use of the staff weapon in PvP on my necro and "Yes" the marks are visible to enemies but, "No" it does not present a problem with their use. Either I am placing them directly in the path of, or beneath, enemy players - in which case they are triggered instantly... Or, I have them placed on/near the perimeter of a point I intend to hold, in which case they act as a deterrent, and a psychological handicap to the opponent while they remain there. I have had fights where the opponent was so preoccupied with avoiding my "red circles" that it hampered their movement more than if they had triggered the mark in the first place.
War is fought in the mind before it ever reaches the battlefield.
I'm fairly sure they are, along with ranger and thief traps. It would be nice if they weren't so easy to spot..

I think they are visible, yes :)
I'm pretty disappointed in this from a functional and a RP perspective, but I am just a lowly minion..
